Plastic Production
In 2018, The American Chemistry Council estimates 35.7 million tons of plastic were produced in the US. EPA studies estimated that over 20 million tons of plastic were landfilled that year. With recycling rates as low as 5.6%, plastic is piling up.

Toxic Plastic
Plastic contains toxic chemicals such as polyvinyl chloride and polyurethane that pollute our environment and bodies as they have been found to disrupt our endocrine systems and cause oxidative stress.
Microplastics including polyethylene have been found in our water, air, and even our blood.
Yet, consumers are reliant on plastic products to meet their basic needs.

Plastic Policy
In Tennessee, there is legislation that prevents single-use plastic from being banned. This leaves the solution to plastic pollution in the hands of the consumer, and neglecting the actions of the primary polluters.
Good news! The Tennessee Waste Reduction and Recycling Act (TWRRA) has been introduced that places packaging companies responsible for the costs of recycling.

AKA Extended Producer Responsibility Bill
- Also known as the Extended Producer Responsibility BIll
- Provides funding to expand recycling by transferring costs from local government to packaging brands
- Funds rural recycling
- Similar bills in California, Colorado, Maine, Oregon, Illinois, and Maryland
- Current standard in the EU
- Establishes a Producer Responsibility Organization
- Existing PRO Circular Action Alliance Members: Amazon, Walmart, MARS, Unilever, P&G, Target, Pepsi, Coca Cola and more.
